BURAKA’S 2011 HIGHLIGHTS

As 2011 draws to a close, we felt we could drop some words regarding what we have been doing for the past 11 months. Here are some highlights in case you are living under a rock and missed the latest news.

Hangover (Bababa)

We traveled to Cape Verde for a concert back in 2010 and took the opportunity to shoot our first video there. It’s a classical Buraka track in every sense and the video has the same inspiration: raw, intense and funny. Just the way we like it.

Hangover (Bababa) Remix EP

As you all know – we love club culture and it wouldn’t be fair if we don’t drop something for all the ravers out there. We had the pleasure to collaborate with the Dubstep Don Caspa, Netherlands’ own bass prankster Munchi and Oporto smooth-talkers Voxels for the Hangover (bababa) Remix EP. Check it out here!

We love to be on stage but in 2011 we only had a few live shows. We were mostly in the lab making sure we would deliver great songs, but we couldn’t miss the opportunity to perform at XOYO in London and Sonar Coruña and Barcelona back in June.

(We Stay) Up All Night’ feat. Blaya & Roses Gabor

The second single off the album – ‘(We Stay) Up All Night’ – which is, as you can tell by the title alone, a great party anthem made as a dedication to all the freaks, geeks and nerds who stay up all night on the Internet, on Facebook, Twitter, iChat and so on, but also at the clubs, raves, concerts and parties all over the world. The single features Roses Gabor and Blaya, who makes her debut as a full-fledged vocalist, a transformation that began to take form on stage as she began to experiment with her voice as a percussive instrument, instantly becoming an essential part of the Buraka sound.

Komba

Obviously, the indisputable highlight of the year was the release of our new album “Komba”. We spent almost a whole year making the successor to “Black Diamond”, taking our time to create a diverse and electrifying new take on the global ghetto revolution that is our sound. The result is a collection of eleven tracks intended to make the listeners dance their asses off. Komba, the Angolan ritual that gives the album its name, is a celebration of life that brings friends together around a table full of great food and a loud sound system, and what could be better than that?

Here’s what the good folks of Okayplayer and NME said about it. Even though it’s cool to check the reviews, don’t forget to listen to the music and form your own opinion about it, and please share it with us via Facebook, Twitter or Tumblr. We would love to know it.

I believe most of you already have the Burakaton feat. Bomba Estereo and Hangover (Bababa) Stereotyp Remix. We offered these tracks as free downloads a while ago, but here they are again, as well as our exclusive Enchufada mixtape:

We’ll be back on the road soon, as we’ve been craving to share new songs and new concepts, and especially to present it all in a live setting. It has been 3 years since the last time we were in this position, back when ‘Black Diamond’ made us travel all over the globe. The main differences we see between both of these phases are that our certainties and arguments about what is or isn’t original and how to cultivate the inspiration that allows us to find a sound that defines us as a band are a lot more interesting now.

We shouldn’t forget that creating is communicating. Learning how to articulate in our own language and to redefine the boundaries of what we identify as inspiration will lead us to a group mindset, ensuring that the necessary behavioral readjustments needed to face 2012 will have a desirable impact with every member of the collective, as well as everyone who’s been with us on this journey.

Happy new year and see you soon

Buraka
(Conductor, J-Wow, Riot, Kalaf and Blaya)
